Midterm 2 is now scored and recorded. I hastily placed the scores and grade approximations on this web page (above) as well as in the glass case outside Steinhaus
Hall. I plan to make more information about the exam and the overall class standings available on an ongoing basis (i.e. as I find time). Specifically you will be provided
with score distributions, score statistics, and cumulative grade approximations. Once again I must make clear the caveat that the grade approximations are merely estimates
made using the same conditions as the UCI School of Biological Sciences grading policy for core courses which is to be formally applied to overall cumulative scores at the
end of the quarter. The answer keys for all four versions may be viewed and downloaded from the above link.
Make Up Exams:
If you need to make up Midterm 2 you must arrange to do so by Tuesday, March 4 1997 by seeing the course coordinator. You must provide a valid,
verifiable excuse for missing the exam.
Change of Instructor Notification!
Please note that Dr. Lynn Carpenter will not be lecturing for the last third of the course as indicated on the syllabus due to unforeseen complications.
She will be replaced by Dr. Brian Metscher. Lecture topics and corresponding reading assignments will include that which is listed on the current syllabus
plus any additional assignments given in lecture.
Reserve Material:
On reserve in the Science Library are some sample exam questions from past quarters. It should be noted that these exams were written by and for former
BIO 94 instructors which are not/will not be teaching this quarter (namely Drs. Weller and Metscher). Therefore the content and style of these examples will most likely differ from future
exams.
A Word About Tutors:
I have received a number of complaints regarding certain tutor(s) who have been requiring their students to purchase
photocopies of old exams during review sessions. This is considered improper by the university as well as by the BIO94 instructors and is in no way
authorized. In addition, the appropriate authorities have been contacted regarding this practice. I thank all who have brought this to my attention and I
encourage students in the future to keep me posted as to all types of suspicious or otherwise disturbing activities surrounding this class.
Midterm Examination I is Complete
The first midterm is now over and graded. Test scores and distributions are posted here (see above) as well as in the glass case outside Steinhaus Hall.
The answer key is posted in the glass case outside Steinhaus Hall. You may also download a copy of the master answer key for all four test versions in the
form of an MS Word 7.0 file above. Grade approximations were determined by the official curve sanctioned by the UCI School of Biological Sciences. These
can be found in the glass case outside Steinhaus Hall as well as above. This was updated on Thursday, January 30 at 12:00 noon (if you checked before
this time you might want to look again). You may pick up your test in 119 SH. I ask that you please try to keep this room neat and the tests in alphabetical order.
I also recommend that you retrieve your test as soon as possible. No more make up exams will be given.
You should remember that your final grade is determined by a curve applied to your cumulative test scores at the end of the quarter. In other words, it is
possible to get A's on the first two exams yet get a much lower grade overall. This is because your grade is determined by the overall score distribution which
can vary from test to test.
